Resume Workshop!!

Students welcomes Dr. Kirby’s first lecture in her new role as Pre-Law Advisor! She answered questions about resumes designed for law school applications and internships. Have you ever wondered if a law school resume is really any different than those prepared for other graduate schools? Ever wondered low long it should be? What about how much law schools really care about your freshman internship? She let attendees know! Keep an eye out for similar workshops next semester.


OU Law Admissions Representative Meet and Greet

Texas admissions specialist Alyssa Bickford returned to campus to discuss OU’s College of Law. A popular choice for students seeking a school near the Dallas legal market, OU presents a great opportunity to get a top-notch legal education at a fraction of the typical price. Students interested in oil law may also find OU an attractive choice to set their career on the right path. Thanks for joining!

CWRU Mock Lecture/First General Meeting

New and returning members joined for an informative mock lecture presented by CWRU’s Dean Berg. Dean Berg discussed the legal implications of and process for marijuana legalization. One of the oldest law schools in the nation, Case Western Reserve offers an excellent legal education for an equally excellent value.

Additionally, this served as our first general meeting.

OU Law Admissions Representative Meet and Greet

The school’s new Texas admissions representative, Alyssa Bickford, received her Bachelor’s from OU in 2014. In 2017, Ms. Bickford completed her Juris Doctor at OU’s College of law. During her time in law school, Ms. Bickford served her university in many capacities. Students joined Ms. Bickford as she explained what clinics, classes, and programs her alma mater offers to J.D. candidates.



KU Admissions Representative Meet and Greet

Ranked in the Top 20 for both Moot Court and Degree Value, KU is a great choice for students. J.D. Candidates at the University of Kansas have the opportunity to participate in diverse clinics, workshops, and placement programs. The school also offers multiple study abroad and D.C. semester programs. Students interested in learning more joined KU Rep Steve Freedman to discuss his school.



UT Law Admissions Representative Meet and Greet

UT has one of the highest ranked law schools in the nation, public or private. An admissions representative met with attendees as a group to discuss general programs and admissions information. We then broke for private meetings with individuals interested in learning more about UT.



Texas Tech Admissions Representative Meet and Greet

TTU has consistently been a top choice for UTD students looking to stay relatively local and/or attend a Texas law school. Of the same token, TTU has always valued the incredible experience and expertise their incoming UTD alumni carry with them to their law school journey. Students joined us for an informative discussion with a TTU representative.



Constitution Day

JMPLS and Student Government partnered to bring students a new and exciting revamp to our traditional Constitution Day format. Members of JMPLS and UTD student body listened to Dr. Champagne’s lecture on right to counsel, poverty and its influence on bail, search and seizure, and civil forfeiture trends. Students then enjoyed slices of pizza as they toured the hypotheticals provided by JMPLS.

EPPS Organization Fair

JMPLS was available for questions about pre-law during the annual EPPS Organization Fair. New students us to learn about our organization, pre-law, and the various advocacy teams relating to pre-law.

Cometville Carnival

Students interested in pre-law met with JMPLS officers Christina Lanier (President) and  Neha Singh (Public Relations) to discuss what pre-law at UT Dallas looks like. Additionally, attendees enjoyed the free swag from the countless booths and  demonstrations from UTD Cheer, Dancing for a Cause, and several other dance groups. It was truly a carnival!

UTD Alumnus Visit: Charles Gillis

Charles Gillis is a UTD alumnus who is the Executive Director of Munsch Hardt, a 120 member firm in Dallas. While he is not an attorney, he has made his career running law firms. Mr. Gillis graciously offered to visit his alma mater and discuss the business of running a law firm. His unique insight into the legal profession provided attending members a new perspective on their future careers. Thanks to everyone who joined!



South Texas College of Law (Houston College of Law) Representative Visit

Ms. Alicia Cramer from the South Texas College of Law, Houston graciously offered to visit campus and inform students on the many benefits of attending STCoL. In addition to being one of the most affordable law schools, the oldest law school in Houston also holds the distinction of winning many moot court and alternative dispute resolution competitions. How Do I Pay For Law School? A Financial Aid Workshop

Attending law school does not come cheap! Students stopped by to hear from a representative of AccessLex and Anne Dutia, Pre-Law Advisor and former law school admission representative. The two experts spoke about the ways students may finance law school attendance and scholarship tips.



Annual Supreme Court Trivia

Location: Founders Second Floor Atrium

What an evening! Nine participants of all levels competed for the title of Supreme Court Trivia extraordinaire. The top five competitors received a commemorative gavel. The audience, who acted as search engine experts for one of the participants’ lifelines, enjoyed the plethora of pizza and popcorn as they diligently watched their friends vy for ultimate prowess.

Baylor Law School Dean of Admissions Visit

Assistant Dean of Admissions M. Jenny Branson visited our campus for a mock trial competition. Given Baylor’s continued commitment to UTD pre-law, she agreed to meet with our general members to discuss Baylor’s unique programs and opportunities. Students especially interested in trial advocacy found Baylor’s commitment to advocacy (including scholarships) and experience suitable for entry into a litigation career.

First General Meeting/University of Virginia School of Law Representative Visit

New and returning students joined us in the brand new SSA building for light snacks, general info, and an informative discussion with Grace Applefeld Cleveland from UVA Law’s Office of Admissions. Ms. Cleveland discussed UVA’s commitment to offering a wide variety of clinics, classes, and practical training. Students in attendance asked Ms. Cleveland questions about her UVA law experience as well as what they would expect from one of the best ranked public law schools in the nation.

Personal Statement Workshop

Visit from Cornell University’s Admissions Dean Monica Ingram

This event was a great start! Cornell Law School is rated 13th in the nation by US News & World Report and offers students hands on experience with the opportunity to participate in numerous clinics, student organizations, and diverse curricula. Students came to listen to our Pre-Law Director and former admissions counselor Anne Dutia discuss the do’s and don’t’s of your law school application. She also elaborated on the ways to make your resume the best it can be. Even if you are not applying this cycle, this workshop was a great way to learn how you can prepare for the future!

Students from around the DFW area came to the Visitor Center to see representatives from law schools around the nation. With more than ninety law school and hundred of students in attendance, the annual event was a huge success! Join us again next year!

Campus Visit from SMU Assistant Dean Jill Nikirk (September 23rd, 2015)

Dean Nikirk from Dallas’s own SMU came to campus to explain to students what SMU had to offer. While SMU had a booth at the Law Fair, Dean Nikirk came to campus privately to share her wisdom on law school applications, admissions, and attendance. SMU is just one of the many schools around the country where UTD graduates consistently apply and attend.



Constitution Day (September 17th, 2015)

Happy Birthday to the Constitution! Students visited the Dr. Anthony Champagne Courtroom in Founders for a mock appellate argument and an informative lecture by Dr. Douglas Dow. The annual event drew a large crowd of students from every imaginable major, from psychology to political science to physics! 

With pizza and an polished argument, it would seem the Constitution got a warm birthday wish from the students at UTD!



First Meeting of the Year (August 31st, 2015)

It was a packed house in the Libra Room! New and returning members came together to hear about this year’s upcoming events and get a sneak peek of UTD’s new LSAT Instructor, Blake Eaton. Amidst the pizza feast, Blake gave a sample logic games and walked students through the steps to solving. 

JMPLS grew by more than thirty new members, ranging from freshmen to seniors to everything in between! Thanks everyone for coming out!


Cometville Carnival (August 26th, 2015)
The JMPLS officers manned a booth at the Cometville Carnival  on the UTD mall. Pre-Law advisor and Coach Tony Seagroves helped the officers manage the booth and provided helpful insight into how to attract visitors.

As part of the events, each booth had to have a game. In true pre-law fashion, the officers gave visitors a riddle!
